Kraft’s Penalty Stroke Lifts Field Hockey in Double Overtime

ANNVILLE, Pa. – Stephanie Kraft (Lancaster, Pa./Lampeter-Strasburg) converted a penalty stroke with 10:34 remaining in the second overtime, vaulting the Lebanon Valley College field hockey team to a 2-1 triumph over Franklin & Marshall in non-conference action Tuesday evening in the LVC Field Hockey Stadium.

LVC was awarded a penalty stroke after Franklin & Marshall committed a violation inside the goal cage. Dutchmen head coach Laurel Martin called on Kraft off the bench, and the sophomore slotted the ball past F&M keeper Jennifer Linder for her first collegiate goal.

Lebanon Valley, ranked No. 5 in the first STX/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll of the 2002 season, took an early 1-0 lead when junior Jen Selin (Pickerington, Ohio/Fallston) scored her second goal of the season on a breakaway 6:53 into the match. The Diplomats drew even with 7:28 left in the first half when first-year student Brittany Croll potted her first goal of the season off a pass from sophomore Stacy Swymelar.

The Flying Dutchmen (3-0) out-shot the Diplomats (1-2) 12-3 in the second half but were unable to slip a shot past Linder as the game drifted into overtime. The Valley still could not find the back of the cage in the first overtime despite holding a commanding 7-0 advantage in shots.

First-year student Carla Reavis (Baltimore, Md./Kenwood) made four saves to earn her third consecutive victory to open her collegiate career. Linder finished with 14 saves.

Lebanon Valley returns to action on Thursday when it hits the road for the first time this season in a 4 p.m. non-conference match-up with Ursinus College.
