KINGSTON, Pa. – Lebanon Valley College split a non-conference twin bill against Wilkes University this afternoon to move to 14-12 on the season. The Valley won the first game 3-2 and dropped the second 5-3 after the Lady Colonels scored five runs in the fourth inning to rally past a 1-0 deficit. Wilkes improved to 17-11.
In game two, Lebanon Valley held a 1-0 lead entering the bottom of the fourth inning. LVC scored its first run in the first inning on an RBI single by junior
Krissy Wardrop (West Chester, Pa./Downingtown).
Wilkes then sent eight hitters to the plate during the fourth frame. The Lady Colonels tied the game at 1-1 when Kim Graver drew a bases-loaded walk to score Melissa Mendygral. Carly Streznetcky was then hit by a pitch to force home Dominick and give Wilkes a 2-1 lead. Sandy Mullen then smacked a double to right field that scored all three base runners and gave Wilkes a 5-1 advantage.
In the fifth, freshman
Kelly McManus (Langehorne, Pa./Neshaminy) was hit by a pitch with one out, followed by a walk to senior
Kendra Atkinson (Olyphant, Pa./Lakeland). Junior
Amanda Potteiger (Halifax, Pa./Halifax) grounded out, allowing both McManus and Atkinson to advance a base. Freshman
Chris Jessen (Newfield, N.J./Woodstown) followed with a single to score both runners and make it 5-3.
Lisa Hartman scattered nine hits to pick up the victory for Wilkes. Senior
Sam Rill (Lebanon, Pa./Annville-Cleona) was tagged with the loss after allowing all five runs and six hits in four innings of work. Rill and Jessen each had three hits for the Valley.
In the first game, Lebanon Valley tied the game at 1-1 in the second inning on a solo home run by Wardrop. LVC then scored twice in the third to move ahead 3-1. Freshman
Melissa Ulrich (Reinholds, Pa./Cocalico) singled and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore
Casey McCool (Spring Mills, Pa./Penns Valley Area). A fielder's choice by freshman
Ilyse Resnick (Holland, Pa./Council Rock), combined with a Wilkes error, allowed Ulrich to score and moved Resnick to third. She later scored on a single by Rill.
Wilkes pulled to within 3-2 in the fourth on a solo home run by Leora Kleist, but the Lady Colonels were unable to push across the tying run.
Ulrich was the winning pitcher after tossing five innings and allowing two runs on four hits. Freshman
Jess Cooney (Rockledge, Pa./Abington) notched the save by pitching the final two frames and allowing only one hit. Hartman, who allowed only four hits, was credited with the loss.
LVC will play at Moravian College this Saturday, April 20, in a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
