WILKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College women’s tennis team concluded its 2002 regular season schedule on a high note, winning its final three matches to finish 9-6 after defeating Wilkes University 6-3 Wednesday afternoon in a MAC non-conference contest.
The match was also the last of the season for Wilkes, which finished the year winless at 0-9.
LVC won five of six singles matches, led by senior Jenelle Zeigler’s (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles. Zeigler ran her personal winning streak to four and raised her record to 9-5.
Other winners for the Flying Dutchmen included junior Kristen Barone (Womelsdorf, Pa./Tulpehocken), sophomore Chris Jessen (Newfield, N.J./Woodstown), first-year student Sophia Kwon (Enola, Pa./Cumberland Valley) and senior Robyn Sotak (Eldersburg, Md./Liberty). Barone pulled out a 6-0, 6-3 win at third singles, bumping her record to 7-7. Jessen captured a 6-1, 6-1 victory at No. 4 singles and improved to 10-5 while Kwon posted a 6-0, 6-2 win at fifth singles and moved to 8-3. Sotak won by forfeit for her second win of the season.
First-year students Angela Petiak (Wapwallopen, Pa./Berwick) and Jenny Larson (Kelso, Wash./Kelso) grabbed the Valley’s only doubles win with an 8-5 victory at third doubles.
Although LVC has no matches left on its schedule, the team is eligible to submit two singles players and two doubles teams in the MAC Individual Championships on Oct. 18-19 at Drew University (N.J.).
