Volleyball Takes Two at Scranton

SCRANTON, Pa. – The Lebanon Valley College women’s volleyball team pushed their record to 25-10 after picking up a pair of non-conference victories Saturday afternoon in a tri-match at the University of Scranton.

The Valley, which played both matches without top offensive player Megan Brillhart (Hanover, Pa./New Oxford), started the day with a 3-2 win over Scranton (15-13), the defending MAC Freedom Conference champions. LVC fell behind 1-0 after dropping the opening game 30-27. But the Flying Dutchmen rallied to take a 2-1 lead, winning game two 30-25 and taking game three by a 30-24 margin. Scranton captured game four 30-28 to force a tiebreaker, in which the Valley came out on top by a count of 15-11.

LVC capped the day with a 3-0 sweep over Gallaudet (D.C.). LVC won by scores of 34-32, 30-28 and 30-21.

First-year student Lexi Horstman (Hummelstown, Pa./Lower Dauphin) paced the Dutchmen with a team-high 20 kills against the Royals. Classmate Catherine Roth (Hanover, Pa./Delone Catholic) enjoyed a “triple-double” with 52 assists, 14 digs and 10 kills while sophomore Amanda Bahn (York, Pa./Spring Grove) notched a “double-double” with 12 kills and 15 digs to go with three service aces. Junior Angie McCracken (York Springs, Pa./Walkersville) added to the Valley’s offensive attack with 11 kills.

Junior Sherri Pursel (Dillsburg, Pa./Northern) spearheaded the Dutchmen’s defensive effort against Scranton with a team-high 19 digs and four blocks. First-year student Katie Ferree (Waynesboro, Pa./Waynesboro) was effective all day in making service receptions and finished the first match with 14 digs. Senior Steph George (Lebanon, Pa./Cedar Crest) added five blocks.

Against Gallaudet, Bahn led the way with a team-high nine kills. She also had eight digs and two blocks. Pursel contributed with eight kills and eight digs while McCracken delivered seven kills and three blocks. Roth dished out 31 assists and Ferree came up with 10 digs. Horstman and George chipped in with three blocks apiece.

LVC will take a week before competing at the Eastern University Tournament next Saturday. The Valley will face Eastern, Richard Stockton (N.J.) and McDaniel (Md.) in the tournament
