Cynthia Adams won Lebanon Valley College's first-ever NCAA track & field championship in the 800m and
Michael Harnish claimed the silver medal in the men's 800m.
The pair joined shot putter
Mariah Smolka in competing at the 2015 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track in North Carolina, as the trio completed an historic weekend for Lebanon Valley College track & field.
In the final race of her LVC career, Adams ran a flawless 800 meters to claim the national title and her third all-America honor. Her time of 2:08.81 won by nearly two seconds over defending national champion Kylee Verhasselt of Wisconsin-Oshkosh, who she had edged by only a hundreth of a second in Friday's preliminary session.
"I thought I had a really good chance, everything's been going well all season and this was my last race ever," an emotional Adams said after the race. "This is what I've been working for since I was a freshman."
Adams started in the front group and slotted into fourth place at the break before making a quick move to the outside at the 400m mark. She moved up from there, catching the Oneonta's Rachael Shine at the bell and accelerating through the final 200m to stretch the field and hold off Verhasselt with a big kick. Her time broke her own LVC record by nearly three seconds, and was the fifth-fastest time in NCAA Division III history.
"I was focusing on position, I knew we were out relatively hard but I also knew that I was strong enough and fast enough to hopefully counter anything. We hit 50 to go, and I knew," Adams said.
The fifth-year graduate student, who is pursuing her doctorate of physical therapy at LVC while using her final season of eligibility for this winter, ends her stellar career a three-time all-American and eight-time Middle Atlantic Conference champion in the 800m among 12 MAC titles overall. She joins LVC and MAC Hall of Fame shot putter Ann Musser Davis '99 as the only Dutchmen to win three all-America honors in a single event. Adams is Lebanon Valley's first individual national champion in any sport, and only the second ever joining the 1994 men's basketball team.
Harnish became LVC's first male to repeat as a track & field all-American with his national runner-up finish, running an aggressive race to finish in 1:52.95. Harnish led the opening 600m off a front start, pushing the pace to break the field apart. National champion Mitchell Black of Tufts drafted him the entire way, and made his move at the bell to win by a second.
"I'm feeling really good about it," Harnish said of his silver medal performance. "Mitchell is a great runner, obviously by his seed time coming in. We went through 57 a little slow so I figured I'd take the lead and try to run away. It didn't quite work out but I'm really happy with second."
The all-America finish, Harnish's second in a row, goes with his MAC title in the event as he looks forward to his final outdoor season and a return trip to NCAA Championships this spring.
Senior
