READING, Pa. - All good things must come to an end.
For Lebanon Valley College softball, that meant the end of their program-record 18-game winning streak, which was snapped by Alvernia Tuesday in a doubleheader split between the Commonwealth Conference co-leaders.
The Dutchmen (20-4, 9-1 CC) had not lost in more than a month, and continued their hot play with a 2-0 shutout in the opener. The Crusaders (22-4, 9-1 CC), who had been just as hot riding an 11-game win streak into the set, captured the nightcap 6-3 despite LVC recording 10 hits.
Jorey Aumiller had three runs batted in for the Dutchmen, including both in the opener, while
Katie Deardorff scored three runs.
Sam Derr won game one before taking the loss in game two.
Aumiller singled Deardorff home in the third inning of game one to give LVC a 1-0 lead, then did the same thing again in the seventh to provide some insurance. Derr worked out of a seventh-inning jam to complete the win after scattering six hits; Alvernia left runners in scoring position in three innings.
The Crusaders' bats woke up in the second game, taking advantage of an LVC error to put a run across the first before manufacturing four more in the second. LVC brought two runs back in the fourth thanks to back-to-back knocks from Aumiller and Derr, and a seventh-inning rally fell short after Steff Secola doubled in a run. LVC could not capitalize on three Alvernia errors, leaving the bases loaded in the second and runners in scoring position four times.
The Dutchmen will visit Kean University Thursday.
