ANNVILLE, Pa. – In an even battle from start to finish, the Lebanon Valley men's soccer team knocked off Elizabethtown on Saturday afternoon at Herbert Field, 2-1.
The opening goal of the game was a creative one as freshmen
Gabe Stasyszyn and
Alex Detweiler connected for a 1-0 lead. Stasyszyn received the ball on the left corner of the six and instead of trying to turn the ball into the middle, flicked it up over his head with his back to the goal and into the far-side netting for the first tally in the 27th minute.
Less than three minutes later, the Valley struck again as sophomore
Cam Alexander assisted on junior
Kyle Fronk's first goal of the year to push the lead to 2-0. LVC drew a free kick in the far-side corner just outside the 18. Alexander stepped up and ripped a shot off the hands of Elizabethtown goalkeeper Rodrigo Barrera and onto the foot of Fronk, who slammed a shot off the bottom of the crossbar and into the back of the net for the two-goal advantage.
Following the halftime break, Elizabethtown got on the board in the 66th minute as a cross from Andrew Sandridge found the head of Zach Lee to cut the LVC lead to one at 2-1. The Valley defense stood tall over the final 20-plus minutes to secure the victory and send the Blue Jays to just their second conference loss of the year.
Senior goalkeeper
James Clements was stellar, picking up his ninth win with eight saves. The Blue Jays held a 14-5 edge in shots and an 8-0 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
With the win, the Valley moves to 9-5-3 on the year and back to .500 in Commonwealth Conference play at 3-3-1.
Next up for the Dutchmen is a trip to Chester on Wednesday evening for a matchup with Widener at 7 p.m.
