Elizabethtown 5, Lebanon Valley 4
WEST LAWN, Pa. - A ninth-inning run by Elizabethtown broke a 4-4 tie and gave the Blue Jays a 5-4 win in the opening game of the 2012 Commonwealth Conference Championship Tournament.
The Dutchmen (24-17) suffered three fielding errors that led to all five of Elizabethtown's runs.
LVC got on the board early with runs in the first two innings.
Ryan Schwartz walked in the first and eventually came around to score on an RBI double by
Aaron Mills that shot deep into center field.
Phill Dohner and
Tim Filer hit back-to-back doubles in the bottom of the second to put the Dutchmen up 2-0.
With two aboard in the fourth, Blue Jays centerfielder Kevin Berkheiser doubled down the left field line to tie the game. LVC was able to take one of the runs back in the next inning on an RBI single by
Jordan Witmer but would never regain a lead.
The Blue Jays (20-20) forced starter
Caleb Fick out of the game in the seventh with a pair of unearned runs on singles by left fielder Tim Rosser and first baseman Luke Gatti.
Dohner was able to tie the game with an RBI single to center in the bottom of the inning, but Rosser scored the game winner two innings later on LVC's third error of the night.
Fick pitched 6.2 innings, allowing four hits - none earned - on seven hits and two walks.
Jimmie Miller and
Lee Webber pitched in relief.
Dohner led the team's offense, batting 3 for 5 with a run and an RBI.
Jacob Rhody finished 2 for 3 with two walks. Witmer,
Colt Zarilla, Filer, and
John Hildebrand had a hit apiece.
Elizabethtown will advance to play Messiah, an upset winner over top-seeded Alvernia, on Friday. LVC is thrown into an elimination game with Alvernia Friday at 11 a.m.
